Eye Examinations

Both of Tri Optical’s Ottawa clinics are proud to offer high-quality, thorough eye examinations for customers of all levels of care. The frequency at which a customer will require an examination depends on his or her risk level for visual impairment. Patients at a higher risk for visual impairment include those with diabetes, cataract, macular degeneration, glaucoma (and glaucoma suspects), and/or patients with a family history of these conditions. If you are unsure of your risk for visual impairment, please speak with your family doctor.

Remember, if you are under 20 years of age or over 65 years of age and have a valid Ontario Health Card, your eye exam is free once a year. If you have been diagnosed as diabetic, you are also allowed one free eye exam per year.

For low-risk patients, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society recommends the following:
• Age 19–40 years: at least every 10 years
• Age 41–55 years: at least every 5 years
• Age 56–65 years: at least every 3 years
• Age > 65 years: at least every 2 years

For high-risk patients, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society recommends the following screening intervals:
• Age > 40 years: at least every 3 years
• Age > 50 years: at least every 2 years
• Age > 60 years: at least annually
